Co-Head U.S. Equity Portfolio Management

Mark Broughton is a co-head of the Rainier U.S. equity team and acts as a senior portfolio manager and equity research analyst.  He began his investment career in 1986, working in corporate finance at Drexel, Burnham & Lambert in Boston and Los Angeles.  In 1991, Mark joined Provident Investment Counsel in Pasadena, where he served as an equity analyst and associate portfolio manager.  Beginning in 1996, Mark was principal, senior portfolio manager and director of research at Badgley, Phelps and Bell in Seattle.  Prior to joining Rainier in 2002, Mark was lead portfolio manager of Blackrock Financial Management’s core equity product in Philadelphia.

Mark holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance and Entrepreneurship and a Masters of Business Administration in Finance and International Finance and Economics from the University of Southern California. He is a member of the CFA Institute and the Seattle Society of Financial Analysts.

Michael Emery is a co-head of the Rainier U.S. equity team and is serving as a senior equity portfolio manager and analyst.  He began his investment career in 1995 with Roger Engeman & Associates and later in 2001 for Franklin Templeton Investments, Inc.  During the early years of his career, Michael’s experience included research and statistical analysis.  Prior to joining Rainier in 2008, Michael was the vice president/small cap equity  portfolio manager at Provident Investment Counsel.

Stacie Cowell is a member of the equity management team, serving as a senior equity portfolio manager and research analyst.  She began her career in 1989 as an analyst for Chase Manhattan Bank, New York, NY.  Beginning in 1993, Stacie was a senior analyst on the small/mid cap team for Founders Asset Management in Denver, CO.  Prior to joining Rainier in 2006, Stacie was senior vice president and lead portfolio manager with Invesco Funds Group, Denver, CO.

Andrea Durbin is a senior equity portfolio manager and equity research analyst. She began her investment career in 1992 with Dain Rauscher in Minneapolis.  During her tenure there her experience included research, marketing, investment strategy, and trading for various fixed-income products.  Prior to joining Rainier in 2002, Andrea was a principal at Badgley Phelps in Seattle where she was a portfolio manager and served as director of fixed income overseeing the management and trading of fixed-income and balanced portfolios.

​Katie Wham is a research analyst on the U.S. equity portfolio management team at Rainier.  She began her career in the industry at Touchstone Investments in Cincinnati, Ohio as a business development/performance analyst.  Katie started at Rainier in 2009 as a product specialist/marketing associate and joined the U.S. equity team as a research associate in 2010.​

Head of International Investments

​Henrik Strabo is Rainier Investment Management’s head of international investments.  In this position, Henrik is responsible for building and managing Rainier’s international small cap capabilities.  Prior to joining Rainier in 2011, Henrik was managing director of global emerging markets for Rogge Capital.  His more than 20 years of previous experience also includes international chief investment officer positions at American Century Investments and Clay Finlay.  While at American Century, Henrik’s responsibilities included portfolio management duties for their Discovery Fund and International Growth Fund.

Senior International Research Analyst

​Mac Rygiel is a senior international research analyst.  Prior to joining Rainier, Mac served as a research analyst at Artisan Partners, covering global energy companies.  As a research analyst at Janus Capital Group in Denver, he transitioned from a generalist role covering various industries including global energy, utilities, materials, and financial services to focus on energy.  Mac worked as a corporate finance analyst at BC Hydro & Power Authority and began his career as an analyst at Raymond James in Vancouver, B.C.​

Matt Seguin is a research analyst on the U.S. equity portfolio team. He began his investment career at Rainier in 2014 as a research associate on the U.S. equity team following graduation. Prior to graduation, he completed internships at manager research investment firms, focusing on micro- and small-cap strategies.

Tyler is a Principal and Director of Equity Trading for Rainier Investment Management.  He joined Rainier as an equity trader in 2007.  He is responsible for seeking to obtain best execution, leveraging his extensive knowledge in customizing and integrating Order Management Systems (OMS) and Execution Management Systems (EMS). Tyler’s industry experience began in 1996 as a portfolio accountant with Scudder Kemper Investments in Boston, MA. He continued in 1998 with Westpeak Global Advisors, Boulder, CO, where he was responsible for trading across small-, mid-, and large-capitalization stocks.

Tyler is a past officer and current member of the Pacific Northwest Security Traders Association and National Security Traders Association.  He is also a member of the ICI Market Structure Advisory Committee.  He has also participated as a panel expert on various industry topics for Trade Tech USA, Trade Tech West, Advanced Trading’s Buy Side Trading Summit.

Matthew Steadman joined Rainier Investment Management as an equity trader in 2012.  He is part of the team responsible for the implementation of investment ideas across Rainier’s various investment strategies with a focus on international trading.  Matthew started his investment career in 1998 at Copper Mountain Trust in Portland, OR and began his equity trading career in 2002, during a period of rapid growth for the Benson Value Team at Wells Capital Management. Prior to joining, he spent some time with Chinook Capital Management where he was charged with building out their trading desk and leading the best execution and soft dollar committees.

Additionally, he is responsible for leadership of the institutional client service/sales and consultant relations team. James joined Rainier in 2005 and has served as president since February 2011.  Prior to joining Rainier James worked with all institutional client and consultant channels at Columbia Management Company and Quest Investment Management, Inc. Before beginning his investment career, he worked as a labor relations representative and management trustee for a large national corporation.

Chief Compliance Officer

Lisa Thenell is the chief compliance officer (“CCO”) of Rainier Investment Management, LLC and the Rainier Mutual Funds. Her career began in 1989 as a registered representative at a boutique brokerage firm in Seattle Washington. In 1996 she came to Rainier as the director of mutual fund services and supervised all legal, regulatory and marketing efforts of the Rainier Funds. She was appointed CCO of Rainier and the Rainier Funds in 2008.
